THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME
The wise virgins
The parable of the ten virgins · Matthew 25:1–13
Jesus told of ten young women who took their lamps and went out to meet a bridegroom. Five were wise and brought extra oil; five were foolish and brought none. When the bridegroom was delayed, they all grew drowsy and fell asleep.
At midnight, a cry announced that the bridegroom was coming. The women rose to prepare their lamps. The foolish asked the wise for oil because their lamps were going out. The wise told them to buy their own, since there would not be enough for everyone.
While the foolish women were away, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went with him into the wedding feast, and the door was shut. When the others returned and asked to enter, the bridegroom said he did not know them.
Jesus ended with a call to watchfulness: be ready, because you do not know the day or the hour.
